講義概要/Course description
This course will present to students the fundamentals of formal semantics and pragmatics.
達成目標/Course objectives
Semantics is the study of linguistic meaning. Pragmatics is the study of linguistic meaning and its interaction with context. Formal approaches to these disciplines make use of mathematical and logical tools to understand how meanings are composed and how speakers employ them to achieve their goals. This course examines the basic concepts of semantics and shows how they can be applied to a range of empirical phenomena; the phenomena chosen will depend on the interests of students.
