講義概要/Course description
The Reading 1 coursework selected material will have some emphasis on current global cultural, legal or social issues that are newsworthy as well as culturally fabled stories that relate to a moral or ethical concern of the past and in this modern era of literary exchange. The human element or the emotions that are conveyed in the stories will be discussed further for deeper analysis and interpretation. Thus, there will be a broad-based range of cultural and social learning experiences for this coursework that helps us formulate opinions that resonate our understanding of the meaning behind what good citizenry would be in society. Moreover, students are encouraged to develop their own ideas and in expressing their opinions about each story in a group settings with the instructor in an interactive exchange on the computer each week. Each student will be allowed to express their well-formed opinions openly in order to build-up English fluency levels through guided discussions and group research on media-related and Internet-based research from the technique called “Modeling” and/or “Shadowing” for English as a Second Language learners (ESL). For proven study techniques in English, the theories based on Tony Buzan’s mind-mapping techniques will be introduced for students in order to enhance their retention of story themes, plots, characterizations and message impact on the audience.

達成目標/Course objectives
Students are asked to be both creative and logical thinkers while being trained to be analytical to the themes in a given story whether it be make-believe (fiction) and/or based on true events (non-fiction). Students are encouraged to consider whether they are able to identify with each of the characters as created by the author. We will discuss the intention of the writer and the cultural influences that may have affected the writer’s point of view.  To become more in tune with a wider global perspective, students would be asked to be more critically attuned to various media-based news stories.  Another skill set for students to learn is to search and find answers that provide us with a better understanding about a given situation that had caused disharmony or conflict that affects us globally. Ultimately, we are seeking solutions for a better lifestyle through educational means in terms of developing a global consciousness based on universal value systems.  We need to consider the interdependency we have with each other in terms of our limited natural resources, and how we emotionally react and act in accordance to a given matter that affects everyone globally. We will explore the realm of commonly recognized social values that define our individuality and cultural identity, family bonds as well as community and societal concerns for better ways to encourage economic growth, to establish homeland stability and to instill group harmony between different cultural groups through our English communication skills. In awakening our own sense of moral and ethical values in society and how we interpret these stories, we will be more engaged as a society.
履修条件(事前に履修しておくことが望ましい科目など)/Prerequisite
Students are encouraged to create their own computerized translated notebook that incorporates vocabulary, culturally appropriate idiomatic phrases, and other personal notes for this coursework based on the review of a variety of stories. Students are encouraged to do their own translation work as homework in order to isolate one’s knowledge of word usages in a given social context either from either a cinematic point of view as well as stories that relate to human interests. It is advisable to develop your own style of note-taking during this coursework. This form of creative learning will be helpful for each student to connect with the words or idiomatic phrases in both Japanese and English. In being consistent each week in their individual or joint efforts, each student will be able to build-up their English fluency levels for TOEIC-based examinations through practiced recognition and meaningful understanding of words in context.  Most importantly, this coursework will guide students to develop and improve their writing levels for international communication as part of a team-based powerpoint presentation project.

Moreover, there will be video and other media-related material provided by the instructor each week so that students can visualize the situation and consider how people are affected in a given situation or circumstance.  Problem-solving activities are provided for students to develop critically thinking based on innovative ways and will be based on prior models and examples of leaders with legal or special knowledge to either understand or solve a particular social problem in a positive manner.
