講義概要/Course description
The Reading 2 coursework will be an extension of the prior coursework from Reading I, but the stories relate to technology-based innovations and a more future-oriented viewpoint for things to come for the next generations. While there will be themes that relate to the traditional work ethics and cultural value systems that are based on a more philosophical view of the meaning of life. There will be opportunities for students to explore and research stories that relate to improving society as a whole.  In the second part of this coursework, there will be some latitude for students to take more initiative in their final work product either as an individual and/or as a team-based sharing efforts for working model presentation.

達成目標/Course objectives
Students are asked to become more open-minded to see other cultural interpretations of a story, and to decide how this interpretation connects to your own cultural understanding of global and contemporary matters.  There will be interpretative historical models for students to analyze varying cultural group patterns in a given society in order to form opinions for guided discussion class sessions. In order to be more critically attuned to the given media-based facts or from story narratives by famous writers, we need to also learn how to search and find answers that provide us with a better understanding about a given situation that had caused disharmony or conflict from the global perspective. How can we solve problems of the past and/or problems that may come to us in the near future? There will be an emphasis of developing new paradigms or workable solutions that are positive-oriented so that social reform, if any, can be done without harm to others. Student are encouraged to research and search for stories that provide messages on how we can seek viable improvements in technology, economics, political ideals within the educational realm as well within society itself through the staying power of literature and poetry.

履修条件(事前に履修しておくことが望ましい科目など)/Prerequisite
Students are encouraged to do their own translation work as homework in order to isolate one’s knowledge of word usages in a given social context. Also, hand-written journaling or note-taking skills are encouraged in this coursework to help each student connect with the words or idiomatic phrases through media-related or movie-related stories as well as news articles to develop listening, reading comprehension and to improve oral speaking skills. In being consistent each week in their efforts, each student will be able to build-up their English fluency levels for TOEIC-based examinations through practiced recognition and meaningful understanding of words in context through the development of guided writing practice for international communication and team-based powerpoint presentations.

Social issues in contemporary and historical societies will be provided from print material and/or from specially prepared translation electronic documents for students each week, depending on our pacing schedule for learning new information and ideas.  For example: Concept of Positivism and Social Media Exchange, Technology and Innovations, Global Warming at an International level, Energy Renewal and the Biodiversity, American Political forums, Race Relations, Ideals of Success in Society, Religion, War and Peace, etc.  Students are encouraged to establish groups of 2-4 students to prepare written opinions on a given social issue and how to best analyze the social problem through fact-finding Internet-based exercises that are guided by the instructor.  Each group will prepare powerpoint presentations each semester in order to develop oral speaking skills from original or prepared script.  Video and other media-related material will be provided by the instructor each week so that students can visualize the situation and consider how people are affected in a given situation or circumstance.  Problem-solving activities are provided for students to develop critically thinking based on innovative ways and will be based on prior models and examples of leaders with legal or special knowledge to either understand or solve a particular social problem in a positive manner.
