講義概要/Course description
This course is designed to introduce students to the key concepts, approaches and major controversies in globalization.  It helps students understand what globalization is, what it is not, and why it is viewed as such a powerful—and controversial—transformative force in the contemporary world.  The course also offers students the opportunity to develop their English communication skills by reading, discussing, and debating about the key controversies surrounding globalization.  Two categories of issue areas are considered during this semester (additional issue areas are addressed in Global Studies I during the spring semester).  The first involves the impact of globalization on security policies, including international terrorism, nuclear proliferation, and great power conflict.  The second focus on globalization’s impact on the environment and public health, including climate change, alternative energy, and the spread of pandemics.  Bi-weekly reading assignments, debate preparation, and a final exam require students to spend about 120 minutes preparing for class each week.

授業方法/Method of instruction
Two methods of instruction are used in this class.  In the first, class begins with an interactive lecture in which the instructor explains material from the assigned readings while asking questions of students and responding to questions they raise.  The lecture is followed by either one instructor-led class discussion or multiple discussions by student groups, the results of which are reported to the entire class at the end of the session.  In the second, a formal debate, moderated by the instructor, is conducted in which two teams of students take opposing positions on a particular controversy in globalization. Debate teams are assigned beforehand and students prepare in advance as homework assignments.
