講義概要/Course description
This course is designed to expose students to a wide variety of reading materials that discuss issues of our world today for the following purposes. Through reading the materials in a textbook and others and listening to the selections from the best TED Talks, students learn reading strategies including skimming, scanning, finding supporting evidence, grasping main ideas, recognizing sequence and summarizing. Students are also expected to obtain information by reading from online resources and to learn how to read and think critically about issues on environment, technology, education, health, energy, statistics, psychology, engineering and art.

達成目標/Course objectives
When the course is completed students will be able to:

1. Identify and use reading strategies.

2. Think critically about the information from reading as well as from other sources.

3. Read, listen to and think intellectually about a variety of materials on current global issues.

授業方法/Method of instruction
Students are divided into groups and carry out a discussion/debate on the topics of the week. Students will take the initiative to create a lively and fruitful learning experience during the course. Instructor will provide lectures for students at the beginning of a course and whenever deemed necessary. 

成績評価方法/Evaluation
1 100% Students will be evaluated according to:

Class participation – 30%
Submission of homework – 30%
Weekly tests and final examination – 40%
