THEME: The Future of Food
DESCRIPTION: As the climate changes and because of unsustainable industrial food practices, our food systems are now at risk and this has international and global political and economic consequences. In this course we will examine these practices, risks, and consequences. In particular, we’ll look at tensions between local action and transnational practices, highlighting sovereignty issues, regulatory efforts, and civic involvement. Topics may include food maldistribution and poverty, the right to food and water, food production and disease, working conditions, fast food and nutrition, genetically modified food, labeling standards, etc. This will depend on the interests of students, who will take an active role in choosing specific topics for research and discussion. A second aim is to ready students for 3rd and 4th year lecture and seminar courses taught in English. Toward this end, in the class we will interact with a variety of English materials and students will express their ideas in debates, discussions, and presentations. Also, students will practice academic research methods and writing and sharpen their critical thinking skills.

授業方法/Method of instruction
|
Note that the above lecture plan below is a model plan only; individual professors will determine their own lecture plans and inform students about them during class. The content of the course will be at a fairly high level. The course will emphasize all four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), utilize a variety of different material, and be academic-oriented. The courses will be taught in a seminar-style. Some lectures may be included, but the course will be primarily participatory and interactive. For example, students might listen to a lecture or tape on a given theme; read supplementary material outside of classes; lead discussions in class; and submit final written reports. |

In accordance with guidelines established by the Ministry of Education, students do not receive credit simply for attending classes. However, students' grades may be reduced for failing to attend classes. Students may not have more than three excused or unexcused absences in one semester in order to pass the class. Being late twice counts as one absence.
