講義概要/Course description
CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE VISUAL CULTURE (AUTUMN)

This course introduces Japanese arts and visual culture from Edo to post-war period based on selected themes.Lectures will focus on the themes of Japan and the world, imagination and disaster, and retailing, while considering its semiotic study. We will discuss the relationship between contemporary Japanese society and its artistic products, as well as the function of visual arts in contemporary Japan and how the West influenced it.

1. Develop a deeper understanding and critical eye of Japanese culture.
2. Develop the ability to construct what to say as an organized discourse.
3. Discuss with insight aspects of Japanese visual culture and the fine arts, as well as the impact of postmodern life on its development.
4. Practice formulating thoughts and ideas in writing.

成績評価方法/Evaluation
1 100% Attendance and Participation: Regular attendance and active participation in class are essential. In addition,students are required to write their reflections in a weekly journal after the lecture/ discussion. This will help them organize their thoughts about what they have learned, and clarify any questions they may have on the topic.
 
Movie Review: Students are required to submit a movie review based on the films that will be shown in class. Student scan choose between “Silence,” or “Akira” for their report. A brief outline and three sources for their final essay is required prior to final submission (min.600 words excluding citations and bibliography).
 
Presentation: Students will be asked to make presentations based on the class lectures.

Fieldwork: Students are given this period to make field observations related to the class lectures to formulate their own conclusions.
 
Attendance: 30%
Film review: 35%
Presentation: 35%

All classes and presentations will be made in English.

* Class contents may change during the course of the semester.
** Students are required to create an account on Edmodo. Instructions will be given on the first day of class.

NOTES:
1. Please come to class as often as you can. A student with more than three unexcused absences will be considered as “dropped out,” and will receive a failing grade.
2. Late submissions will be given point deductions.
3. I take plagiarism very seriously. Any student caught plagiarising work will automatically fail the course.
4. Absolutely NO SLEEPING in class.
5. Please take calls outside of the classroom.
