講義概要/Course description
This course is an introductory class to the sociology of gender and sexuality. We will examine various forms of social differentiation and social relations related to gender and sexuality, which are socially constructed in specific cultural and historical contexts.
達成目標/Course objectives
The purpose of the course is to get familiar with sociological discussions about gender and sexuality. Through the course, students shall acquire a perspective which enables them to identify problems related to difference, power, sexism and other dimensions of gender relations underlying social and cultural phenomenon.
履修条件(事前に履修しておくことが望ましい科目など)/Prerequisite
Knowledge of gender studies is not necessary, but interest in gender and related issues is desirable.

授業計画/Class Sexual differences are often seen as biologically innate, but sociologists oppose this idea. Reading a textbook, we study a sociological critique of biological determinism regarding sexual differences.

授業計画/Class Religion and morality have long formed our notion of which human behavior or act is  "correct" and "wrong". This applies to sexuality, too. We will study the case of Western Europe and hopefully expand our scope of discussion to other parts of the world.

授業計画/Class The recent years witnessed the rise of LGBT activism across the world, particularly in  the West, but also in Asia including Japan. Using the textbook, we review some developments and discuss the current situation within and outside Japan.

授業計画/Class Sociologists have developed various theories explaining gender inequality. We will study a functionalist and various feminist approaches and critically examine these different approaches.

授業計画/Class One of the feminist approaches, postmodern feminism, is closely related to queer theory, another theoretical branch in gender and sexuality studies. We will study major characteristics of queer theory as well as post-structuralist or post-modern thought that affects the development of queer theory and postmodern feminism.

授業計画/Class One of the major gender issues in today's globalized world is sex industry. We will study how feminists and gender scholars discuss prostitution and sex work and understand their different standpoints over this issue.

授業計画/Class Feminist movement is a form of collective action by people who want to intervene the current gendered social structure and bring about change. We study how and why these movements emerged and what motivated individual women who initiated mobilization.

授業計画/Class We will wrap-up the course in this final week session. Each student shall give a short presentation about how their knowledge of gender has changed through this class and what theory or discussion they find most interesting and why.
事前学習/Preparation Students are asked to prepare their presentation.
事後学習/Reviewing Make an output of your presentation in a written form. Use aMS word-format, A4, Font: Times New Roman, size 12, Space margin 25mm,double-spaced, 5 pages at maximum. Submission deadline will be notified when the semester begins.
授業方法/Method of instruction
Students are required to do presentation for at least one topic. Depending on the class size, students may be divided into teams and asked to do presentation in team. In-class discussion shall be based on this presentation as well as the textbook.
成績評価方法/Evaluation
1 100% Regular attendance is a prerequisite for evaluation. 80 percent of the attendance is necessary, i.e. students who miss more than three sessions will risk failing the course. 
Students shall contribute to class discussions, and do off-class assignments (writing and reading assignments, preparation for presentation, and so forth). 
All assignments must be submitted by a preset deadline. 

Evaluation:
Participation (more than attendance!)         20 percent
In-class activities (e.g. discussion, presentation)     25 percent
Off-class activities including response papers            25 percent
Final presentation and essay          30percent
