講義概要/Course description
Theme: Actions for Sustainable Development Goals
This course provides the opportunity to discuss the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by leaders during the 2015 United Nations Summit. Since SDGs matter for everyone, governments of all types of countries (including those with low, high, and middle incomes), as well as non-government organizations, private firms, members of academia, social groups, and individuals are creating initiatives and taking actions to achieve them. Due to their comprehensive and universal features, SDGs (which are composed of 17 objectives addressing economic, social, and environmental issues) inspire many of us to become involved in their realization. This allows us to explore ideas for achieving SDGs in innovative ways. At the same time, we may also face challenges, such as a lack of resources and competing interests among actors.

This course is organized into three components. First, students will deepen their understanding of SDGs through short lectures, exercises, and in-class discussions. Second, they will explore their own research topic regarding initiatives taken for SDGs, examining ways to achieve these goals by assessing the challenges faced by relevant actors. Third, students will learn essential skills for conducting research through their active participation in class discussions, preparation for their presentations, and writing their term papers.
