講義概要/Course description
 This course is for students who plan to write academic theses or research papers and is designed to provide them with an understanding of research methods, personal experience in the investigation of a topic and the skills needed to create and complete a thesis/research paper.
Areas of focus include:
・ Introduction to Research Methods and other areas of inquiry
・ Evaluating Primary and secondary sources
・ Choosing a topic, searching for information
・ Developing and testing a hypothesis
・ Critical thinking and objectivity in the study of culture and social issues
・ Acknowledging sources and avoiding plagiarism
・ Writing for a purpose, knowing your audience, Developing effective writing skills

The objectives of this course are to provide resources, support, motivation and research skills for students to successfully complete an academic thesis or research paper.

授業方法/Method of instruction
This class will be conducted in a Hybrid/high-flex format. Please contact teacher for details and further information.

The first section will focus on building and applying previosly learned research skills and methods. The format will be workshop and seminar style. Students are required to provide most of the material for each class. The teacher will comment and provide advice for narrowing topics, deciding a thesis and developing a viable research project.

The second section will be conducted as a peer revision and support workshop. Through peer review sessions, teachers guidance and specialized, needs based instruction, this section of the course will provide students with the time and resources needed to complete a well written and thoroughly researched thesis.

You are required to complete 1 mini presentation and summary of anarticle, participate actively in discussions and ask questions. Design anoriginal ethnographic research project and give a short 3 minute presentationto the class.
Format: Seminar, workshop and directed study.
