IE CORE SECTION: LEVELS I, II, III
   The IE Core Section meets weekly for 180 minutes. It is an integrated English class because all four English skills are taught in the same class. All instruction will be in English. Students in this class learn small group discussion skills, and listen to dialogues and short lectures as well as watch videos. Learning tasks include participating in and leading small group discussions, keeping a journal, and reading for fluency (using--in IE I and II--a digital library for extensive reading of graded readers), and analyzing two novels in IE I, IE II, IE III. The links connecting the pair work and small group activities in class are themes such as Urban Life, Travel, Childhood, Biography, and Cross-Cultural Values.

IE WRITING SECTION: LEVELS I, II, III
   Level I emphasizes paragraph writing (topic sentences), including description, classification, and comparison-contrast rhetorical structures. Essays (with thesis statements) are introduced in Level II, and further developed in Level III (quoting and paraphrasing from sources using APA style). The writing topics are taken from IE Core Section themes.




達成目標/Course objectives
IE Core --The objectives include learning how to conduct a discussion and to participate effectively in one; reading fiction and identifying basic literary terms, writing to communicate through a journal or a blog. In addition, grammar points will be reviewed, reading skills introduced, and new vocabulary covered.

IE Writing -- Level I is about paragraph structure and rhetorical types such as description, comparison-contrast, argument, classification, and analysis. Level II consists of the introduction of the essay form, and comparison-contrast and analysis essays. Level III is about APA style references, the use of quotations, and classification and persuasion essays.

IE Active Listening -- Developing strategies for listening to a variety of forms, including news, TV and online features, documentaries, and film. Students use online videos to make written summaries, for small group discussions and for group presentations to the class. In addition, they will be using an online course, EnglishCentral, to develop their listening ability.

授業方法/Method of instruction
In principle, IE classes will be conducted in a Hybrid/high-flex format. Students should consult with their IE instructor and/or check Coursepower to find out the details of the method of instruction.

Each class will be a combination of short teacher lectures, student small group work or discussions, peer feedback on writing assignments, with some speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities.
成績評価方法/Evaluation
1 100% Students will get a combined grade from their work in the three different sections: IE Core (40%), IE Writing (30%), and IE Active Listening (30%). Therefore, they must attend all three classes and do well in each one to a get a good score for the IE Program.

1 IE I and II students will use Richards, Jack., Jonathan Hull, and Susan Proctor. New Interchange 2, 5th ed., Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2017. All students of IE I, II, and III will also need Interactions 2, 2th ed., New York: McGraw Hill, 2012. There is a student booklet for the IE Core and IE Writing sections as well. However, some teachers may assign only part of it which may be downloaded at… http://www.aogaku-daku.org/ie-program-textbooks-guidelines-and-handbooks/ . Students should check with their teachers.
