アメリカ文学とポストヒューマニズム


     Even though we recognize ourselves as human without suspicion, it is still challenging for many to define clearly on what condition we are categorized as human beings and to what extent our contemporary notions of humanity differ from traditional understandings of humankind. Not only our ways of life but also our potentials as agency have been transformed in modern times by the advancements of science, medicine, technology and information.
　わたしたちは自らを人間であると疑いもなく認識していますが、それではどんな条件において人間として分類されているのかとか、現代における人間性というものへの理解は昔からあるものとどれくらい異なっているのかとか、はっきりと定義することは難しいと思います。現代においては、科学、医学、技術、情報の発展によって、わたしたち人間の生活様式のみならず、行為主体（agency）として発揮できる能力だって、大いに変容しています。

     In this course, we will learn posthumanism, an idea that humanity is always in the process of transformation and re-arrangement, and consider how the concept of humanity has been demarcated or questioned with reference to a variety of works of American (and other) literature.
　この講義科目では、ポストヒューマニズムという新しい思想潮流について概説的に学び、さまざまなアメリカ（時には別地域の）文学作品に触れながら、人間という概念がいかに設定されているか、あるいは問いに付されたりしてきたのかについて考察したいと思います。


     Since posthumanism is an attempt to see the world WITHOUT an anthropocentric (human-centered) viewpoint, we will examine the literary works in which themes such as technologies, animals, ghosts and monsters, and medicine are addressed.
　そもそもポストヒューマニズムとは「人間中心的」な観点を「抜き」にして世界を観察しようという試みでもあるので、この科目では、科学技術、動物、幽霊にモンスター、医学など、人間を相対化するようなテーマが取り扱われている文学作品を英語で読んでいきます。

     This course will be conducted in Japanese, but most of the course materials, handouts and worksheets, will be written in English. 
　教員の講義は日本語を使用言語とするが、授業用資料、配布物や課題の大半は、英語が使用言語となります。しかし、教員のほうから和訳された教材の紹介などもしますので、英語の語学力を強く求めはしません。
達成目標/Course objectives
a. Learn how to read literary works in connection with the questions and arguments raised in the field of posthumanism.　
ポストヒューマニズムの領域で挙げられる問題や議論と関連させて、文学作品を読む方法を学ぶこと。
b. Develop critical and philosophical thinking.
批評的思考、哲学的思考、を育むこと。
c. Acquire the advanced skills of writing academic essays either in English or Japanese.
英語にせよ日本語にせよ、学術的エッセイを書く技術を上達させること。

Please note:  If students took the course Lecture on American Literature Ⅰ (1) already in 2020 academic year, they cannot take this course for two consecutive years. Please contact the lecturer of the course if you have questions about this policy.    

※2020年度前期開講のアメリカ文学特講Ⅰ（１）をすでに履修済みの学生は、本特講を履修することができません（ほぼ同一の内容となるため）。

授業方法/Method of instruction
This lecture course will be an in-person class (but in some cases remote learning could possibly be available as supplementary).
対面授業（通常型）、補助的に遠隔授業を用いる場合がある。

It will be carried out as a mix of
     ・lecture 
　  ・In-class work (reading and writing)
     ・Question and answer session

※The main platform we use is Course Power.

成績評価方法/Evaluation
1 平常点 In-class Points 60% Students are required to submit "in-class worksheets" each week. In-class worksheets consist of quizzes, discussion questions and reading questions, etc.

※毎回提出するワークシート（クイズ、ディスカッション向けクエスチョン、リーディング課題などから成る）を評価します。
2 レポート Report 40% Students are required to submit a term paper (1200-2000 words in English) via Course Power until the end of the semester. 

※期末レポートを評価します。
