講義概要/Course description
Undergraduate Thesis Writing
Undergraduate research and thesis supervision will be conducted in the following areas:

* TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
* ESP (English for Specific Purposes -- particularly health care settings)
* CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning)
* Curriculum and Program Development
達成目標/Course objectives
Students will learn how to...

* read and understand the structure of academic articles.
* conduct library and Internet research to seek out and research a topic of interest.
* create a thesis statement.
* make a research plan.
* write an outline.
* gather data in a systematic way.
* use a vareity of analytic tools to interpret results
* write a coherent and comprehensible thesis.
* use academic conventions for citing sources and to properly quote, summarize and paraphrase.

By the end of April: Decide on a thesis and write a preliminary thesis statement

By the end of May: Prepare an outline after consulting the research literature in the area of research selected.

By the end of June: Complete a review of the literature and write an annotated bibliography.

By the end of July: Refine the thesis statement and outline, if necessary. A plan for the gathering of original data should be in place. [NOTE: Close consultation with your advisor is especially important at this point.]

By the beginning of September: Conduct the research investigation (i.e., collect original data) using the method(s) decided on after consulting with your advisor. Begin analyzing the data.

By the end of September: Complete the analysis of data. Submit a projected abstract (subject to later refinement).

By the end of October: Decide on section headings for the thesis and determine how your research findings fit into the literature. Submit a first draft of the thesis to your advisor.

By the end of November: Revise or add any parts of the thesis deemed necessary by your advisor.

By the second week of December: Submit your completed thesis, along with an abstract.

Students should have taken Academic Writing and passed with a B grade or higher.

事前学習/Preparation Noticing how data is analyzed and represented in published studies.
事後学習/Reviewing After discussing data generated in study, beginning to think about how best to analyze and represent it.

授業計画/Class Writing and submitting a "projected abstract" (subject to later refinement).
事前学習/Preparation Doing a genre analysis of abstracts to see how they are constructed and features they have in common.
事後学習/Reviewing Making various drafts of the projected abstract and submitting them to teacher for feedback.

授業計画/Class Deciding on section headings for the thesis and determining how research findings fit into the literature.
事前学習/Preparation Analyzing how the sections in various published research papers are divided and finding an organizational system most appropriate for the graduation thesis being conceived.
事後学習/Reviewing Various formats for the sections of the graduation thesis are proposed and submitted to thesis adviser for feedback.

事後学習/Reviewing After discussing readings with advisor, quotes, summaries and paraphrases from readings are input into citation management system—Mendeley.

事前学習/Preparation Genre analysis of the methods section of research reports is carried out.
事後学習/Reviewing A draft of the methods and procedures of the student's study is submitted and feedback given by adviser.

授業計画/Class Effective use of figures and tables 
事前学習/Preparation Different ways of representing data (e.g., through figures and charts) are scrutinized in a variety of research studies concentrated in areas relevant to the graduation thesis.
事後学習/Reviewing Excel is used to generate some figures and charts that will be used in the graduation thesis.

事前学習/Preparation Genre analysis of the discussion section of research reports is carried out.

事前学習/Preparation Examples of reference lists using APA and MLA style are studied and differences noted.
事後学習/Reviewing Student compiles reference list that is consistent in either MLA or APA style.

事前学習/Preparation Reflect on all aspect of the thesis writing process and writing impressions of what was most rewarding, frustrating, enjoyable, and painful.
事後学習/Reviewing Informal get-together with all graduation thesis peers and teacher to celebrate the completion of the thesis.
