講義概要/Course description
|
This course is intended to help students develop their English communication skills by offering them opportunities to participate in the following activities: Listening skills: Listening to authentic English from the radio, television, film, documentaries, etc. Speaking skills: Discussing, debating, and otherwise responding orally to the material presented in class. Reading skills: Reading articles from newspapers, magazines, and other print sources. Writing skills: Note-taking; writing summaries and responses to material introduced in class. Auxiliary skills: Acquiring basic media literacy skills (e.g., detecting biases, stereotypes, misinformation, etc.) as they apply to the broadcast and print media; acquiring the ability to access news and current events in English.
Additionally, in this seminar I have some flexibility to design the course. Therefore, I want to share with you things about my culture, and things that I think are cool, or interesting, or things I just really want to share with you. That will include songs that I think every human being must become familiar with, and music that I think every global citizen ought to know. We will also watch videos and engage with other media that I hope you find thought provoking. We will talk about various topics, sometimes very serious, and sometimes light

メッセージ/Message

Always bring a dictionary to class (paper or electronic OK).
Translation software is strictly forbidden.
You may use your phone in class ONLY for a dictionary app.
Or, on a rare occasion, they could be used for purposes related to the class, as a research tool. This should be done only with permission from the teacher.
I recommend using a dedicated electronic dictionary 電子辞書
This syllabus is subject to revision, and will likely be revised based on the needs of the students, and the current trending topics at the time of the class
There will be some topics related to your major, but students should be prepared to speak, read, write, and listen to English on a variety of topics
As for materials, I will give you handouts, and we will likely use X-reading, which is a subscription based reading material service. The university has purchased a site license for this service, and therefore it is provided for all students, without additional cost to the students. In other words, you won't need to buy anything extra to use it. The teacher will show you how to join it and use it after the semester starts
