講義概要/Course description
This course is designed so that student's will get to discuss, research, and present information in English about every major political ideology from the Western world. 

This course is intended to help students develop their academic skills in English by offering them opportunities to
participate in the following activities:
Listening skills: Listening to spoken (or taped) academic lectures; note-taking.
Speaking skills: Summarizing, discussing, debating, and otherwise responding to material presented in class;
summarizing and presenting material read outside of class.
Reading skills: Reading English source materials on academic themes.
Writing skills: Writing summaries, critiques, short reports (e.g., book reports)
Auxiliary skills: Ability to respond to and critically evaluate material presented in lectures and textbooks.
達成目標/Course objectives
The purpose of this course is to prepare students to perform academic work in English in future classes. By the end
of the course students should be able to take and basically understand a university-level course taught entirely in
English.

2. Who were the early socialist philosophers and politicians? What did they believe?
3. What are the different types of socialism?
4. Does Japanese society have any elements of socialism?
5. Which countries in the world have the best functioning socialist or socialist "style" systems?
6. What are the criticisms of socialism?

事後学習/Reviewing To research any aspect of socialism. It's history. It's philosophers. Its variations. Its success. Its failings.
 Its application in different countries around the world etc.

1. What is communism?
2. Who was Marx? What were his main ideas?
3. What are the different types of communism?
4. Have there ever been any successfully run communist societies or countries?
5. What was the communist system like in the USSR? 
6. Is China really communist? Has it ever been really communist as Marx would understand?
7. Is Cuba really communist? Has it ever been really communist as Marx would understand?
8. Has the Cuban system had any success over the last 60 years?

成績評価方法/Evaluation
1 平常点 In-class Points 100% Students that make a great deal of effort researching subjects, making contributions, and joining discussions as well as preparing high-level, informative, and interesting presentations will be awarded the highest grades. Students that show a lack of effort and do little research into the subjects for discussion and presentation will receive lower grades. Any student who is absent twice without good reason cannot get the highest grade. Any student who is absent MORE than 3 times without an excellent reason automatically fails the class.
