講義概要/Course description
|
This is a survey class of pre-modern Japanese literature before Tokugawa period. Students will be assigned to read important literary works of each period that is accompanied with introductions explaining the cultural and historical context. The reading assignments will begin with a brief overview of major political and social events, brief introductions to the authors and specific texts. It allows you to study both the important works and the cultural history of Japan. The one-year long class is designed to portray a general picture of pre-modern Japanese literature and the elements that nourished the Japanese cultural traditions.
*At the point when the class is planed (Jan. 2022), we are looking for the opportunity to teach in the traditional face-to-face meeting style. However, due to the uncertainty of the Covid pandemic, the following plan and schedule of the class are subjects to change. If the pandemic prevents us from meeting in person, the class would be switched to online meetings.
1. PLEASE FINISH YOUR READING ASSIGNMENT based on the syllabus before every class meeting. Please prepare a hard copy or an electronic version of the assigned textbook. Due to the copy right issues, unfortunately I am not allowed to upload the PDF files of the textbook.
2. FACE-TO-FACE CLASS MEETINGS or ON-LINE LIVE MEETINGS: Please attend the class in person if it is allowed to schedule a traditional class meeting. If not, please join me in the on-line live meetings via Webex. The meeting is going to be held at the following address, with no password required: https://aoyamagakuin.webex.com/meet/t25244
3. SUBMIT A SHORT ESSAY: After the class, please submit a short passage no longer than a double-spaced one page (200 words approximately) on any issue that you care from the reading assignment or the contents of the class. I will NOT give you a “prompt” on what to write. It can be a question, an opinion or a comment on the readings. Please post it on the coursework website; The submissions will be considered as part of your grade on participation and attendance.
4. FINAL PAPER: Please write a 10-15 double-spaced pages of final paper for this class. We will talk about how to do this in the final week of the instruction.

Japanese proficiency (including Kanji Chinese-character literacy) as well as skills to read pre-modern texts are not required but highly recommended.

The genres may vary, and the historical context in behind these writings keeps changing in different time periods. When people talk about tradition, what do they really mean by this concept? A flexible approach and an open-minded attitude from a variety of points of views are required for one who wishes to further fathom the depth of the anecdotes and the messages behind the stories.
