講義概要/Course description
　今まで学習してきたことを復習しながら、「本物」の英語を読んでいきます。「本物」とは、一流の文筆家が書いた文章そのままのものということです。また、「読む」とは字面を追うことだけではなく、言葉ひとつひとつの背後ある筆者のメッセージや文化的な意味を読み取ることでもあると考えます。
　前期はまずGeorge Orwellのエッセイを読みます。Orwellを取り上げた理由は次に記す通りです。『オーウェルはどこまでも祖国と民衆とともに生き、祖国と民衆のために書いた作家といえましょう。そしてそのことが、彼の英語の特徴を裏付けるものであると云えます。彼の英語はDickensとGissingらのイギリス散文英語のもっとも正統な伝統に属するもので、その意味から云っても、現代イギリスの代表的作家であることはまちがいありません。文体は簡潔、平明、しかも柔らかみに富み、英語学習の好個の資料であることは、等しく認められているところです。』「訳注オーウェル選」松浪有編著 南雲堂 1961. 次に村上春樹が2009年エルサレム文学賞授賞式で行った演説を読みます。その後、OrwellのShooting an Elephantとの関連についてレポート提出。
達成目標/Course objectives
自力で英文を読んでいく力を養う。ただ辞書の訳語を並べるのではなく、きちんと筋の通った日本語にできるようする。
