講義概要/Course description
The class is conducted mostly in English.
This course requires full participation in public speaking, policy debate, and round-table discussion. The emphasis will be on giving oral presentations and speeches in front of the class. The main focus will begin with intellectual interrogation, then will lead into controversial topics such as job-hunting matching site, illegal foreign workers, Tokyo Olympics, plastic surgery, airbrushing photos, LGBT, child abuse, reproductive right, surrogacy, affirmative action, entrance examination systems, legacy admission, etc. The students are required to stand up and give opinions based on academic research, instead of just sitting down and being silent.

1. To develop skills in academic presentations and presentational speaking
2. To cultivate critical thinking and logical way of thinking
3. To improve the power of persuasion
4. To be fluent in spontaneous speaking
履修条件(事前に履修しておくことが望ましい科目など)/Prerequisite
2022年度、大川担当、基礎演習履修生は同一年度に履修できない。2023年以降に履修すること。

This is a WEB-selection course. The students are required to apply for registration online before the first class during the orientation week in April.

Several students are appointed as a panelist to give academic presentations the following week. Students in charge will give presentations by showing data with PowerPoint. Panelists cross examine the opponents as round-table discussion. Then, the audiences ask questions to the panelists and give opinions as audience debate.

話す⇒説得⇒討論が授業の主目的であるため、現在の英語力に関わらず積極的に話そうとする態度、文法や発音に間違いがあっても臆せず、発話量を増やそうと努力する学生に履修してほしい。賛否両論に分かれる現代的な論題について「皆で励ましあいながら温かい雰囲気の中で」議論・討論するプロセスにおいて、履修生一人ひとりが切磋琢磨することを期待している。

出席・早退・遅刻は授業参加度、貢献度として扱う。初回、最終授業を含め授業回数の1/3以上、5回欠席がある場合は評価対象としない。
