講義概要/Course description
The aim of this course is to provide individual undergraduate students with one-on-one guidance in graduation thesis development and writing in English about literature and culture with special emphasis on either theoretical or historiographic methodologies, depending on student interest. The plan below is intended as a framework only; its details will be tailored to meet each individual student’s needs and research projects. STUDENTS MUST GET PERMISSION TO WORK WITH ME IN ADVANCE BEFORE REGISTERING FOR THIS CLASS, AND MUST FIND A SECOND FACULTY MEMBER TO WORK WITH FROM THE SPRING/SUMMER SEMESTER AS WELL BEFORE REGISTERING FOR SUMMER SEMESTER
達成目標/Course objectives
The course objective is to produce a competent research essay of 20-30 pages (approximately 6000 words) in English. As a capstone project to the student's undergraduate career, this thesis should evidence reading aptitude in literature, advanced research skills, a thorough literature review, and a strong argument built on the logical development of ideas and counterarguments. To do this, students will need to read widely, write and revise often, and meet strict deadlines for the production of preliminary drafts and research.
NB: The course will adjust and adapt tothe real-time demands of our educational environment and the individual needsof students as classes proceed and the professor identifies how best to meetthe objectives of the course

履修条件(事前に履修しておくことが望ましい科目など)/Prerequisite
The graduation thesis must be written in English. Only students who have already completed Academic Writing, or similar courses, and achieved the highest grades in such courses will be considered for this undergraduate research course. Applicants must meet in person with the professor during office hours or advising periods, as well as submit a writing sample of at least five pages before being considered for this course. Only students with a high level of English speaking, reading, and writing ability, as well as the self-discipline to meet demanding deadlines, can be admitted to this course.

事前学習/Preparation Before each class, review the syllabus schedule but above all check your notes from the previous class about changes to the preparation or reading of assignments
When reading, make notes, check vocabulary, and note any questions about grammar

Aim to develop your own interpretation or critique of the work at hand based on the evidence presented in the text itself ("close reading" / 精読)

Be attentive to your feelings about the text and then try to understand how or why it produces such an effect on you as a reader
事後学習/Reviewing After each class, review your notes and the parts of thetext that you did not understand beforehand and verify what you have learned, and note any new questions or possibilities for interpretation. Keep in mindthat you do not have to agree with the interpretations provided in class butyou should use them as a model for how to present evidence for your ideas inpersuasive, evidence-based ways.
Doublecheck the schedule for the next week against thesyllabus as any changes the professor makes in class take precedence over theinitial syllabus (NB: This is especially important if you were absent fromclass or missed these instructions due to tardiness. Check with a fellowclassmate or email the professor. Also check CoursePower emails regularly.)
