講義概要/Course description
|
This is a survey course in the history of Japanese civilization, focusing on both modern Japan after the Meiji restoration and the pre-modern historical periods. With a concise introduction of remarkable historic events, influential cultural exchanges, millstones of art and literary works, the course helps provide an understanding of the background of Japanese civilization, especially as reflected in traditions of thought that remains alive today. Throughout the centuries, Japanese civilization is inspired and nourished in the cultural cradle of East Asian civilizations. The acquaintance with Japanese traditions is therefore helpful for anyone who wish to see beyond the geographic, temporal, and regional bounds of one’s immediate neighborhood.
Due to the of Covid-19 pandemic, the college has switched the majority of class meetings since the first semester of 2020 academic year. At this stage of class planning, the instruction is supposed to be a traditional face-to-face class meeting; However, it is subject to change if the pandemic keeps expanding in April. In that case, the class is going to be taught on-line via Aogaku's “Course Power” and “Webex” meeting system. The class will be carried on with real-time on-line meetings and homework submissions as followed:
1. PLEASE FINISH YOUR READING ASSIGNMENT based on the syllabus before every class meeting. Please prepare a hard copy or an electronic version of the assigned textbook. Due to the copy right issues, unfortunately I am not allowed to upload the PDF files of the textbook.
2. FACE-TO-FACE CLASS MEETINGS or ON-LINE LIVE MEETINGS: Please attend the class in person if it is allowed to schedule a traditional class meeting. If not, please join me in the on-line live meetings via Webex. The meeting is going to be held at the following address, with no password required:

3. SUBMIT A SHORT ESSAY: After the class, please submit a short passage no longer than a double-spaced one page (200 words approximately) on any issue that you care from the reading assignment or the contents of the class. I will NOT give you a “prompt” on what to write. It can be a question, an opinion or a comment on the readings. Please post it on the coursework website; The submissions will be considered as part of your grade on participation and attendance.
4. FINAL PAPER: Please write a 10-15 double-spaced pages of final paper for this class. We will talk about how to do this in the final week of the instruction.

1. To familiarize oneself with important historic events, art and literary works.
2. To understand the cultural and historic context that fostered Japanese civilization, and key factors that brought drastic changes to it.
3. To acquire skills of critical thinking that encourages one to analyze and to interpret Japanese civilization from multiple and diverse angles in a flexible manner.

Japanese proficiency (including Chinese-character literacy) as well as skills to read pre-modern texts are not required but highly recommended.

Without the inspiration from regions other than Japan such as the Peninsula and the Continent, the Japanese culture might be shaped in a drastically different way. After the Meiji restoration, the imperial Japan switched its position to one of the colonizer powers in the modern history until the end of World War II. Why, how, and what had happened in the historical context? A flexible attitude, multiple viewpoints and open-mindedness toward diversity are what a student is expected in this course.
