講義概要/Course description
In this course, we will develop English skills useful for researching Japanese literature. In the second semester, we will read excerpts from early modern (Edo period) and modern works in translation. We will also learn skills for researching Japanese literature in English, and spend time reading English-language research about Japanese literature. Each student will decide a presentation topic for the semester, and use English-language research when writing a report about the topic. Presentations and discussions will be primarily in Japanese. At the end of the first semester, students will submit a report on the same topic as their in-class presentation.
達成目標/Course objectives
Students will (1) read works of Japanese literature in English, and demonstrate understanding through writing a response based on the reading; (2) analyze English commentaries and research, and describe the features of them; (3) analyze titles and abstracts for research papers in English; (4) locate foreign-language materials in the library and online; (5) analyze foreign-language research on Japanese literature.
履修条件(事前に履修しておくことが望ましい科目など)/Prerequisite
Anyone may take the course regardless of English ability. However, it is recommended that students have high school-level English proficiency or above.
