講義概要/Course description
This course investigates the phenomenon of globalization within the field of economics to provide understanding of today's increasingly interdependent world.  The first half of the course covers financial globalization.  We first examine various motives for international portfolio investments as well as foreign direct investment.  This is followed by a discussion of pros and cons of global financial integration.  The second half of the course introduces students to the implications of economic globalization for growth, inequality and poverty. We first study the recent experience of economic growth in the different regions of the world. We identify the key proximate causes of economic growth and discuss broad characteristics shared by the most rapidly growing developing countries.  Next we examine the empirical evidence on the relationship between economic globalization and inequality and poverty. We look at levels and trends in inequality within nations as well as global inequality.  We also analyze whether globalization helped low-income countries reduce poverty or perpetuated international inequality.  The course concludes with a broad range of policy suggestions. Students will be required to present their research findings to the class in oral form. Details concerning this assignment will be worked out and explained once the definite student enrollment is known for this course.
