講義概要/Course description
|
This seminar is oriented toward students who are interested in the scientific study of international relations, especially the topics related to conflict and peace, international security, and foreign policy. Participants will complete individual research projects which aim at explaining—as opposed to describing—international political phenomena and addressing important research questions through rigorous empirical research, using quantitative (i.e., statistical) methods.
Students are encouraged to tackle a variety of important questions in the domain of conflict and security, or foreign policy more broadly construed. Does democratization lead to international peace? Does deepened economic interdependence (e.g., increased FDI and trade) bring peace? Would a strong alliance tie (e.g., through collective self-defense) improve security or make it more likely to be dragged into an unwanted war? How do the rise of a regional power (such as China) and the decline of global hegemony (e.g., sustained by the U.S.) influence regional security? How does a change in the configuration of the domestic legislature (e.g., U.S. midterm elections 2018) affect foreign policy orientations? It is imperative to answer these questions not based on your personal opinions or journalistic impressions but through logical reasoning and systematic analyses of empirical data. Although the primary focus of this course is on issues related to security and foreign policy, a wide range of research topics will be accommodated, as long as they are feasible and relevant.
In the first year, students identify research questions and develop research plans. The first semester is particularly devoted to intensive reading on major topics in a seminar format and writing literature reviews on the selected topics.

Either at least one prior course in statistical methods or a willingness to take them in the junior year is required. Sufficient English language proficiency to participate in academic activities is expected at the time of application.

Since this course is a seminar, students are expected to finish reading assignments before coming to class and actively participate in discussions. Each student will lead class discussion for several times a semester (depending on the number of students). Although all students are supposed to read the materials, a discussion leader provides introductory remarks about the week's reading (what questions are addressed in the readings, how they do it, and how you evaluate them) at the beginning of the class.
