講義概要/Course description
|
This seminar is for students interested in topics involving political development in Japan and Asia. Political development here refers to changes over time in the content of and relationships between political cultures, institutions and processes. In this seminar, the primary focus will be on political development in Japan, particularly as it relates to changes in Japan’s political culture, including nationalism, voters’ attitudes and politicians’ “folkways”; political institutions, such as the constitution, government organizations, and the party and electoral systems; and political processes, especially the patterns of policy-making that generate Japan’s domestic and foreign policies. A secondary focus will be on political development in other Asian countries from the comparative politics perspective, with careful attention given to how comparisons with Japan’s experience may produce useful insights. The main objective is to help students understand how politics has changed over time in Japan and what these changes may mean for political development in other parts of Asia. An additional goal is to improve students’ abilities to discuss and debate about related topics in English.
This seminar is the primary forum for seniors to discuss their ongoing work on their senior thesis and receive feedback from both the instructor and their classmates. The class sessions will focus on seniors’ chosen research topics and related readings, which will be selected by the seniors and approved by the instructor. Seniors will present the findings of their theses and submit final drafts at the end of the semester.

達成目標/Course objectives
|
The goals of the course are as follows:
① To help students develop a deeper understanding of how and why politics has evolved in postwar Japan and Asia from the comparative perspective.
② To aid students in identifying particular topics of interest for further study.
③ To help students improve their English communication skills by reading, discussing, and debating about politics.
④ To guide students in researching and writing a senior thesis.

補足事項/Supplementary notesThis seminar will be taught as a hybrid, with some class sessions taught in-person and some taught online in real time depending on pandemic restrictions. The manner of instruction for each session will be posted on Course Power. Each class begins with a student presentation on the weekly assigned reading followed by an opportunity for the instructor and class members to ask the presenter questions. The remainder of class time is taken up by further discussion of the topic held with either the entire class participating together or students dividing into small discussion/activity groups. In addition, other in-class activities will be implemented on a regular basis depending on the choices of the students.
