講義概要/Course description
The theme of this course is Political Regime, Identity and Interests.

In the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of our concerns is how we could tackle the challenges arising from the divided society. This course offers a tool and a way of discussing such important issues, which enables to analyze the society and the system which we live in.

This course is designed to explore important features of contemporary politics across the countries. We focus on comparing political institutions, identities, and interests between states/groups/actors using key concepts and theories in the field of political science, specifically comparative politics. Comparing political systems allows us to discuss why some countries are more democratic than others, or experience more violence than others. At the same time, we may find common factors that drive groups/actors to particular behavior. This course examines such differences and similarities by examining cases from various countries.

The course is organized as follows. Firstly, students will grasp essential concepts such as states, government, and political regime. Students then discuss why states and political systems are formed, and why democratic/non-democratic regimes are functional and sometimes not functional, which bring about various actions including violence. Thirdly, students will investigate possible factors (e.g., economic, social, religious, cultural, or gender factors) that compose political identities. The classes lastly discuss the topics of the relationship between states and economy, such as how states function for economic development and redistribution of wealth.
