講義概要/Course description

This course builds on introduction to political science begun in Political Science I (政治学原論 I) by expanding the areas of inquiry to the key actors and institutions of government, the policy-making process and the interaction between domestic politics and international relations. The course is divided into two parts. The first part introduces the actors and institutions that make up the machinery of government, including regime types,executive leaders, legislatures, and constitutions and the law, as well as traces the policy-making process to consider how public decisions are made. The second part highlights the interaction between domestic politics and international relations, including topics such as regionalism, domestic and international security, and emerging frameworks of global governance. Weekly reading assignments and a midterm and final exam require students to spend about 120 minutes preparing for class each week.

|
The goals of the course are as follows: ① To help students understand the key actors and institutions of governments and the policy-making process. ② To provide students an understanding of the relationship between domestic politics and international relations. ③ To prepare students for further study in the field of political science.

履修条件(事前に履修しておくことが望ましい科目など)/Prerequisite
|
Political Science I (政治学原論 I) and Political Science II (政治学原論 II) form a two-course introduction to political science that is required for students in the Department of International Politics. Two versions of these classes, ones taught in English and ones taught in Japanese, are available. Please note that if you took Political Science I (政治学原論 I) taught in English and received credit, you must also take Political Science II (政治学原論 II) in English if you are a student in the Department of International Politics.

補足事項/Supplementary notesThis class will be taught as a hybrid, with some class sessions taught in person and some taught online in real time depending on pandemic restrictions. The manner of instruction for each session will be posted on Course Power. Each class begins with an interactive lecture in which the instructor explains material from the assigned readings while asking questions of students and responding to questions they raise. Following the lecture, students divide into small groups to take part in group discussions,the results of which they report to the entire class at the end of the session.
