講義概要/Course description
This course is designed to provide students with a working knowledge of how to do qualitative research in political science.  The first half of the course introduces the concepts of laws, theories and hypotheses, helping students understand the distinction between these theoretical elements and the methods used to develop, evaluate and improve them.  Examples are drawn from the comparative politics and international relations literature.  In the second half, the course focuses on the case study method and provides students with instruction and concrete examples of how to use case studies to apply, test, and support theoretical arguments as well as to explain particular historical events.  The course concludes by allowing students to develop and present their own research proposals. Weekly readings, student presentations and research proposal assignments require students to spend about 120 minutes preparing for class each week.
達成目標/Course objectives
The goals of the course are as follows:
① To familiarize students with the concepts of laws, theories and hypotheses and the distinction between theory and methodology.
② To provide students with a practical understanding of the case study method, including an awareness of its strengths and limitations.
③ To give participants the opportunity to develop and present a research proposal suitable for a future thesis or other research project.
