講義概要/Course description
|
This seminar is oriented toward students who are interested in the scientific study of international relations, especially the topics related to conflict and peace, international security, and foreign policy. Participants will complete individual research projects which aim at explaining—as opposed to describing—international political phenomena and addressing important research questions through rigorous empirical research, using quantitative (i.e., statistical) methods.
Students are encouraged to tackle a variety of important questions in the domain of conflict and security, or foreign policy more broadly construed. Does democratization lead to international peace? Does deepened economic interdependence (e.g., increased FDI and trade) bring peace? Would a strong alliance tie (e.g., through collective self-defense) improve security or make it more likely to be dragged into an unwanted war? How do the rise of a regional power (such as China) and the decline of global hegemony (e.g., sustained by the U.S.) influence regional security? How does a change in the configuration of the domestic legislature (e.g., U.S. midterm elections 2018) affect foreign policy orientations? It is imperative to answer these questions not based on your personal opinions or journalistic impressions but through logical reasoning and systematic analyses of empirical data. Although the primary focus of this course is on issues related to security and foreign policy, a wide range of research topics will be accommodated, as long as they are feasible and relevant.
In the first year, students identify research questions and develop research plans. During the second semester, students complete their research designs toward the end of the academic year.

Since this course is a seminar, students are expected to finish reading assignments before coming to class and actively participate in discussions. Each student will lead class discussion for several times a semester (depending on the number of students). Although all students are supposed to read the materials, a discussion leader provides introductory remarks about the week's reading (what questions are addressed in the readings, how they do it, and how you evaluate them) at the beginning of the class.

Students will submit research proposals. A research proposal must include clear discussions of (1) the research topic; (2) review of the literature; (3) question to pursue and motivations behind it; (4) your hypothesis and "operational hypotheses"; and (3) a detailed description of research design, including variables, data sources, and the methods to analyze them. The length is typically 10-15 pages, double-spaced.

During the semester, students will present their literature review to class, so that they can get a useful feedback from the participants, including the instructor. Presentations will be evaluated based on the overall performance.
One student is assigned the role of discussant, being responsible to "discuss" the presented materials - evaluate the research design, give comments and suggestions, and ask questions.

Attendance Policy Students are required to attend all class meetings, unless otherwise agreed in advance.
Inappropriate Behavior and Academic Dishonesty Every student is obligated to contribute to a constructive and respectful classroom environment. Students who do not comply with the moral codes will be penalized in terms of the final grade. Any form of plagiarism and academic dishonesty will result in an automatic failure of the course. Consult the University regarding what constitutes academic dishonesty.
Electronic Devices Students should bring your laptop computers or tablets (a laptop is desirable) because activities involve playing with data and online materials. However, the use of any electronic device during class work without the express direction of the instructor is strictly prohibited. All electronics must be turned off prior to entering the classroom unless you have an eText. Unauthorized or inappropriate use of electronic devices may result in being marked as absent for that day.
