講義概要/Course description
Fan culture around the world

Fan culture has become an attractive topic among media scholars since the 1990s. This course will provide the theoretical background of the fan studies in the audience research, from the early 1990s to the present, and examine a range of fan cultures and practices, from fan fiction to cosplay. This course will not focus only on the fan culture in Japan, but also the fan culture in other countries.  
達成目標/Course objectives
- To learn about the history and understand the concepts and theoretical background of fan studies
- To enhance the understanding of cultural globalization
- To compare and contrast fan culture in the mass media era and current media ecology
- To develop an analytical skill by means of discussing various fan culture around the world

This course strongly encourages and welcomes open communication. Rather than a lecturer, the instructor will act as a facilitator in the class. Questions and discussion in the classroom will also be a central part of teaching. Many topics in the class will be explored through in-class discussions and activities related to assigned readings. 

*We will have a small quiz at the end of every class. 

*Note that class contents may change during the semester.

*The class is adaptive class based on students' experience
