講義概要/Course description
|
The course introduces students to Japanese cultural and social history, examining how lifestyles and cultural activities have evolved from ancient times to the present. Topics include, but are not limited to, the family, business and entrepreneurship, books, art, fashion, and anime. By considering these topics from a historical perspective, students will gain insight into how Japanese society has evolved over time, and how historical approaches can aid critical thinking. In doing so, they will become able to question popular images and stereotypes, as well as see what lessons can be gained from the experience of the past. The course thereby offers a solid foundation for future studies of Japan, and can make learning, or teaching others, about Japan a more rewarding experience. Materials will include a range of textual and audio-visual sources.
