講義概要/Course description

The aim of this course is to improve students’ listening and speaking skills while concentrating on science English. In particular, students will learn how to communicate in clear spoken English (at an appropriate speed) about topics broadly related to science and engineering. Additional phrases and expressions will be introduced in an effort to extend students’ communicative range, allowing them to express themselves in more detail while communicating simple technical information in English.
達成目標/Course objectives
科学技術に特化した英語のリスニングとスピーキング力を伸ばすことを目的とする。科学技術のトピックについて適切な速度で明瞭に話された英語を理解する力を養う。既習語句を用いて、自分の意見を加えながら、簡単な技術的な事柄を相手に伝えることができることを目標とする。

As instructors will conduct lessons using a selected textbook (among several possible choices of textbooks), they will explain during the first class meeting how they plan to incorporate selected textbook content with various level-appropriate tasks and exercises to create a highly active and communicative learning environment.

Students will participate in activities that will help them communicate their ideas about science and engineering topics, using a wider range of basic English. Students will also strengthen their ability to understand the gist of longer speeches, including topics related to science and engineering. Moreover, they will be given opportunities to hold conversations in which technical descriptions, comparisons, processes, and cause and effect relationships are discussed. In addition to the final exams, student achievement levels will be tested on a regular basis.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
・understand words which are spoken slowly and clearly.
・ask questions and/or for clarification if they do not understand words/phrases which are spoken to them.
・use language structures and vocabulary (including the use of numbers and units of measurement) to support communication where comparisons, descriptions, processes, and cause & effect relationships are discussed.
・use phrases and expressions to express themselves in more detail while communicating simple technical information (with the use of numbers and units of measurement).
・convey their opinions and support those opinions in simple English.
・express a particular opinion as well as make statements of comparison and/or contrast in order to support their opinions in simple English.
