講義概要/Course description
The course seeks to introduce students to the fundamental political, economic and social components of modern Japan through tracing its historical development from the end of the Pacific War in1945 up until the present. Through a comprehensive and global approach, students will learn of the major developments that have shaped Japan on the way from its struggle to rebuild after the war to its rise as a major economic and cultural power in the contemporary world. The course will cover not only the transformation of the state and social systems, but also the impact of these on the lives and culture of the population.
達成目標/Course objectives
Students will become familiar with Japan’s postwar trajectory, and learn about the major political and social developments that contributed to the ongoing transformation of the modern Japanese state and contemporary Japanese society. They will develop a foundation upon which to develop their own informed perspectives on contemporary Japan.

Attendance and active engagement in classes are essential. Students must attend at least 75% of all classes (with the exception of the first week) to be eligible for course credit. Students up to 15 minutes late for classes will be marked as late, while students more than 15 minutes late will be marked as absent. Students late on two occasions will be marked as absent for one class. If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to ask for any missed material and catch up any work. For technical support regarding online content, please consult the Institute of Information and Media (情報メディアセンター). Students must ensure their work is complete. Late assignments will be subjected to a penalty proportionate to how late they are submitted. There is zero tolerance for plagiarism. Class topics are subject to change. Consult the instructor if you have any questions or concerns.
