講義概要/Course description
|
The course will question discourses of Japanese popular culture in the critical spirit of cultural studies. First, the students will be introduced to modern Japanese culture through lectures, and encouraged to reexamine their areas of interest through reading of texts on the topic written by international body of experts. In the latter half of the semester, the students are required to prepare presentations about their favorite films, TV shows, music, games, sports or other products of Japanese popular culture, and explain in detail why and how those contents are attractive for global audiences. Qualitative, critical and comparative analysis methodology will be applied to all types of content: audio, textual, visual and multimedia. Themes related to material culture and daily life in Japan are also welcome as topics of presentations.

I like to work with students who are ready to do some research on their own and actively participate in projects with their peers. The course will be a mix of lectures/presentations by the instructor, presentations by the students and individual learning. Relevant information will be distributed on Course Power, but if you are interested in this class, please send me an email (a short self-introduction and your particular area of interest within modern Japanese culture) once you register for it. The email address is at the bottom of the syllabus (under `class-related information`) and I typically reply within 24 hours.

メッセージ/Message
|
This class was designed in a deliberately open-ended way, in order to give students a lot of freedom in their choice of topics to present on, as long as those topics fit broadly delineated cultural formats proposed by the instructor. So far the formula has proved right, as participants of many nationalities and backgrounds have shared a variety of perspectives on Japanese popular culture which is now a truly global phenomenon. I see my role as an instructor in moderating your conversation, and in adding new dimensions to what you have already discovered.

その他/Others

Manners and attitude: 1) Eating and chewing gum in class is not allowed. Drinking soft drinks is OK. 2) Be present in your body and mind. Digital/online device usage unrelated to content currently discussed in class will negatively affect your score.
