講義概要/Course description
This course examines major trends in Japanese literature and art from its beginnings to the modern period. It shows how Japanese culture developed in an intense dialogue with nature, and provides a context for how cultural production was embedded in an environment steeped in an awareness of the belletristic rhetoric of the past. Focusing on a close reading of "Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons," a survey of Japanese literature, culture and art, as well as some traditional Japanese industries, we pay particular attention to the theme of 'nature' and the characteristic dynamics that have developed between the natural environment and the socio-cultural landscape in Japan.
達成目標/Course objectives
1. To introduce you to the diversity of Japanese literature, culture and art through encounters with a variety of visual arts and literary works.
2. To give you a solid understanding of important themes related to "nature" and its various manifestations.
3. To encourage you to reflect on the social myths and cultural stereotypes of Japan that are prevalent in both Japan and the West, in order to better understand both Japanese and Western cultures.
4. To encourage you to reflect further on the importance of tradition and cultural memory in Japan, East Asia and the West, in order to gain a nuanced understanding of the similarities and contrasts in different cultural mindsets.
