講義概要/Course description
This class will use lectures and readings to guide students through an exploration of “What is Japan?” and, more importantly, “What is Japan in the world?” We will use case studies based on current global issues:Japan’s “history wars” in East Asia, the US-Japan relationship, migration, and environmental problems.
It will sharpen students’ critical thinking about history at the same time that it introduces some of the key issues facing Japanese foreign relations, both formal and informal. This will be interesting for any students looking to deepen their understanding of Japanese modern history or improve their English-language skills. It is particularly designed to prepare students who want to study abroad or work in a global environment.

達成目標/Course objectives
Practice critical thinking skills about the uses of history
Practice college-level English-language skills (reading / listening / speaking)
Learn about the longer history behind some contemporary challenges
