講義概要/Course description
|
In Marshall McLuhan’s best known book, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man (1964), he (1964), he wrote “The medium is the message.” His idea was that not only is the content of a medium like television or film important, but also the characteristics of the medium itself are important as well. For example, accessing something on your smartphone is usually a personal act, very different than watching a TV program with friends, or seeing a film in a theatre full of strangers. In addition, paintings, photographs, radio, film, and the Internet content are all very different. In the second semester of this course, we will continue to explore the mass media, the relay of information from individuals and groups to large segments of the population, the history of media, its influences, and the convergence of different media today. Lectures will trace the history of mass communication through media such as newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, film, the Internet and Social Media. There will be weekly class readings, PowerPoint lectures, group discussions, weekly discussion questionnaires, and three projects (report and presentation) and a final test.
