講義概要/Course description
British Thought and Cultures II examines various aspects of British history and culture through the study of British literary works and their adaptations. Students will read a novel by Jane Austen, a play by George Bernard Shaw, and a novel by Agatha Christie, and will look at various adaptations of each work. In this course, we will focus mainly on the issue of 'fidelity' in adaptations, and consider how much 'liberty' can be taken in changing various elements of the original works.
達成目標/Course objectives
Although the focus of this course is on literary works and adaptations, by looking at the historical, social and cultural background of each work, students should be able to deepen their general understanding of British history and culture, and gain insight into the various elements which have helped develop the culture and identity of the United Kingdom. Students are encouraged to think critically about the texts and issues introduced in class, and will be required to write an in-class term paper at the end of the course.
