講義概要/Course description
This course is for students who plan to write an academic thesis or research paper, and is designed to provide them with an understanding of research methods, personal experience in the investigation of a topic and the skills needed to create and complete a thesis/research paper.
Areas of focus include:
・ Research Methods: What is research and how does it differ from other modes of investigation?
・ Evaluating sources: Critical thinking, bias and types of information.
・ Thesis Development: Choosing a topic, Searching for information. 
・ Hypothesis Testing:  Making a viable research plan.
・ Style: Writing objectively in the study of culture and communication and social issues.
・ References: Using APA, Acknowledging sources and avoiding plagiarism.
・ Audience and Communication: Writing for a specific audience, Developing unique writing skills.
達成目標/Course objectives
The objectives of this course are to provide resources, support, motivation and research skills for students to successfully complete an academic thesis, research paper and presentation.

事前学習/Preparation Students are expected to write weekly and show progress regularly by communicating with the instructor.
事後学習/Reviewing Revising, editing and responding to feedback are essential to writing a thesis and need to be completed every week.

The focus of this guided study will be on building and applying previously learned research skills and methods. The format will be workshop and seminar style. Students are required to provide most of the material for each class. The teacher will comment and provide advice for narrowing topics, deciding a thesis and developing a viable research project.

Through peer review sessions, teachers guidance and specialized, needs based instruction, this course will provide students with the time and resources needed to complete a well written and thoroughly researched academic thesis or research paper.
