講義概要/Course description
|
The course will continue to reflect on what it means to ‘welcome guests’ to Japan. In the second semester there will be more of a focus on assisting students in practicing straightforward language skills necessary or real-world situations. In addition, they will learn how to soften many of the expressions they are already familiar with. They will work on intonation and discourse features and they will be involved in actual role-plays using the language and terminology they have come across.
'Hospitality English’ is the kind of language that is both polite and welcoming. It is sometimes referred to as ‘English for Social Graces’; however, it is much more multi-dimensional and multi-faceted than that. It actually involves Business English, psychology, technical vocabulary, French expressions (and those from other foreign languages), culture and tradition, and even some aspects of religion. ‘Hospitality English’ can be considered a lingua franca in which both native speakers and non-native speakers communicate graciously with one another.

GOALS
1. to get students to reflect on and develop their English for hospitality;
2. to explain to students how to soften the English expressions they may already have;
3. to help students improve their pronunciation by focusing on stress, rhythm, and intonation to enable them to communicate confidently and to be understood with ease;
4. to assist students in practicing straightforward language skills they will need in real-world situations;
5. to prepare students to welcome guests to their country in major international events;
