講義概要/Course description
In this class, we will look at the relationship between language use and society, exploring main topics of sociolinguistics.  Topics such as multilingualism, dialects, gender, age, politeness, culture, law, and attitudes will be covered. Furthermore, we will learn a basic introduction to some of the common methods used in sociolinguisticresearch analysis.

- Deepen the understanding of not only Japanese community but also multi-lingual communities
- Understand the variability in terms of languages depending on variables like gender, age, race, region, and issues relating to them

履修条件(事前に履修しておくことが望ましい科目など)/Prerequisite
A minimum of TOEIC 600 or higher in English proficiency (mainly Reading and Listening skills) is required. The texts and materials used in the course are written in English, and the videos shown during class, as well as the PowerPoint slides used in lectures, are also in English. Weekly assignments and exam questions will also be in English (though electronic dictionaries are allowed). It is likely that about 90% or more of the class will be conducted in English.


最低でもTOEIC600以上の英語力(主にReadingとListening skills):授業のもととなる資料は英語で書かれており、授業中見るビデオ、また講義に使用するパワーポイントも英語で書かれています。なお試験問題は英語で出されます(ただし電子辞書の持ち込み可能)。おそらく授業の9割程度は英語になると思うので、英語が好きで言語に興味がある学生が履修条件です。

Students who are interested in language, society, and their relation want to join this course!  The languages we look at are not restricted to English and Japanese.


Students wishing to enroll in the course must attend the first (on-demand) and second (face-to-face)  classes. If you miss four classes or more, you will not be eligible for evaluation. You may enter the class if you are up to 30 minutes late, but two late arrivals will be considered as one absence. Furthermore, if you are late by more than 30 minutes without a valid reason, such as a late arrival certificate, the class will not be counted as attended for that day. If you are unable to attend a class, please email the professor in advance.


授業は必ず出席すること。4回以上休んだら、評価対象になりません。2回の遅刻で1回の欠席とカウントします。休む場合は事前に連絡すること。

The exam questions are written in English, and the use of electronic dictionaries is allowed. For written responses, you may answer in either English or Japanese.


試験問題は英語で書かれており、電子辞書の使用は可能です。記述に関しては、英語もしくは日本語で答えて構いません。
