講義概要/Course description
|
The course will focus more clearly on different functions of oral English. Students will both practice and consider the differences of register; talking to friends or talking in a more formal, work-place or academic setting. In each different situation, different oral skills will be practiced, such as expressing personal beliefs, and exchanging views and opinions, or agreeing and disagreeing politely. Practice will take the form of chats between student or more formal presentations amongst other speech acts.

達成目標/Course objectives
|
Again, students will be given frequent opportunities to speak English in class. As a start to using English affectively (to build relationships in English), students will be encouraged to act collaboratively in conversation with partners or groups to practice more skilled conversation; for example, to actively listen to their peers’ spoken contributions, to show politeness, and to enquire after other’s opinions. Classroom tasks will be similar to those in the first semester. There will be a focus on speaking clearly and intelligibly.
The objective of this course is to enable students to express their views effectively and contribute to informal discussions, class discussions, and formal debates. Students will also participate in Socratic Circles and give a presentation. Furthermore, students will develop the habit of writing in a Reflexive Journal as part of the preparation for class each week. By the end of the course students will have gained confidence in their oral English ability and developed their critical thinking skills.

Students will need to prepare before class by writing in their reflexive journals, reading articles, researching topics, and watching TED talks online. Class time is a mixture of discussion in pairs, groups, Socratic circles, and debate settings. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their own performance as well as provide their classmates with feedback. Assessment consists of a number of different graded activities and class participation is very important.

Lectures will be in English.
Active participation is an essential part of this course. All discussion and materials will be in English. There is no set textbook so materials will be supplied by the teacher each week. Full attendance is encouraged. If students miss a class they are responsible for finding out what they missed and are expected to still complete the homework and preparation activities for the next class.
Class activities and/or topics listed in the syllabus may be revised due to student needs.
