講義概要/Course description
The course aims to help the development of fluency skills in a range of styles of spoken communication. Students will develop speaking skills in order to hold conversations, to share information and build relationships and friendships in English. The course will provide plenty of opportunities for students to practice speaking, not only with the teacher but also fellow students. Both fluency and accuracy in speaking will be one aim of the semester.

 Intermediate 
Students will be encouraged to use English to become more fluent and confident speakers. They will be given a chance to speak frequently during each class on topics the teacher and themselves nominated. Fluency and accuracy in speaking will be one aim of the semester, and students will be guided towards appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures to express their thoughts. Classroom tasks will be appropriate to the language proficiency of the students but may include conversations with partners or groups, short presentations, and oral reports, such as narration of personal experiences.

履修条件(事前に履修しておくことが望ましい科目など)/Prerequisite
Students are expected to bring their own electronic dictionary to class as well as other learning resources for the purposes of translation and/or interpretation from English to Japanese.  In the classroom setting, there will be the opportunity for students to use the computer as well.  Please note that the learning curve involves making common mistakes in English, but please note that these are called DEVELOPMENTAL ERRORS. The instructor will provide guidance at that time for everyone to note for future references. Thus, this will help students learn by self-correction.

授業計画/Class For SPRING Semester, we will all meet face-to-face in the classroom. Please check COURSEPOWER, and download your assignment due for the Second Week of class.  After completing your assignment, then please email your instructor for evaluation and review.

授業計画/Class Famous Speakers and Speeches.  Why does style matter when communicating to others?  Watching examples of various speakers and in-class practice sessions in a shared evironment.

授業計画/Class Using our left and right side of our brain and the wholistic approach to learning.  Why?  The left brain is the center for language development. The right side of the brain is the center for music, feelings, and images.  Blending both sides of your brain can enhance your learning potential.  The spoken or writing words elicit our memories, feelings or images from each of us.  This is how we communicate, and let us take this into practice in class through POWERPOINT

授業計画/Class What makes a good powerpoint presentation and what makes a great one?  Let us discuss and talk about what these differences, and to integrate this new knowledge into your own style of oral presentation.  Further, we will talk about how to tell a story using Japanese TANKA poetry.

授業計画/Class How to give an interview with SANDRA CISNEROS, the famous writer of the book, the HOUSE ON MANGO STREET.  There will be a YOUTUBE presentation of Ms. Cisneros work, and in understanding how a writer is influenced by his or her cultural environment and the experiences that can be told to others through the power of words and story.

授業計画/Class Social Issues are a chance for us to solve problems.  The best way to research and find answers on the Internet, and to understand what is important in terms of our social and cultural values.

授業計画/Class The Story arc is the most common way for most stories are formed. You can see this from ancient fables of the past to the modern movie format.

授業計画/Class Group Presentation with Powerpoint slides for story-telling purposes.  All students will participate in this exercise, and will count toward your in-class participation points. Evaluation will be done on how well each team does in creating a story for the listening audience.
