Course description
“Issues in Contemporary American Society” is a course that will provide a comprehensive introduction to some of the most highly divisive issues in America today such as capital punishment, gun control, abortion, substance abuse, and immigration. Such issues have not only created strong differences of opinion among Americans, they have affected politics, the society as a whole, individuals on a personal level, and many other areas of life that people feel strongly about. As a result, there are often no clear answers because people’s feelings and personal beliefs are often strongly involved. Nevertheless, in this course their treatment will be -as far as possible- fair and balanced.

(This course will be taught completely in English)

Course objectives
The aim of this course will be to provide students with a clear and well-rounded interpretation of each particular issue, avoiding prescription, so they will gain a deeper and critical understanding of how such issues continue to underpin and shape American society in the 21st century.
