講義概要/Course description
Preparing a winning approach to a negotiation table requires more than just polite words of exchange, but a real working knowledge of what is at stake for each side to come to a mutual understanding.  Working through the hidden messages through various negotiation strategies, and allowing each side to voice out their opinions so that real and honest dialogue can take place is the key here.  For this coursework, we will have multiple opportunities to witness and learn from other negotiation deals or circumstances that enhance a higher level of exchange and understanding between the diversity of ideas in a creative way.
達成目標/Course objectives
There are always ways to work-out solutions in a creative manner between people of diverse viewpoints. For this coursework, we will be evaluating and analyzing how different viewpoints can actually be valid at the same time, and while there may be an emphasis on one point versus another, the way for negotiation stems from your ability to stand back to see the whole picture fully and broadly. In doing so, the person who negotiates between two diverse viewpoints can provide the space needed for a win-win situation to take place and thus, promote more harmony in relationships at any level of communication.

The key to negotiating between groups or individuals from different perspectives from your own Is to respectfully listen to both sides of the issue. Let the conversation take shape so that information can be garnered toward a peaceful mediation of the conflict. Building trust and empathy can open doors for a win-win solution.
2
授業計画/Class Global conflicts of the past has led the way to war as the answer; however, the antithesis to warring nations is to find the middle road toward peace.  Negotiating the social values that rise up to the use of violence in ways that destroy humanity takes courage and the will to make a stand for what is right. Let us talk about some of the actions taken by world leaders to ordinary people who have gave us insights into resolving conflict through peaceful means.  Actions speak louder than words.
3
授業計画/Class The technology of today has opened the minds and hearts in exploring new realities from our very own, and provides a multitude of ways to see and understand from people from other cultures.  The language of empathy and compassion comes from a human source---our hearts and emotions as well as the feelings that are stirred when we see something that needs to be fixed or in helping those in great need.

Let us talk about how we make things better with our courage and to open our hearts to change the world in a positive way. In other words, let us negotiate our thoughts into action that can make a difference. The words and lyrics of classic songs give us the universal messages and familair rhythms that moves us in ways that allows to understand others.
4
授業計画/Class What happened before does not erase the years that go by for something that is remembered to be a time for sadness or a serious conflicts that had no answers in sight.  Sometimes, these bad feelings and memories will continue, and passed down to the next generations in America. The Civil War from 1861-1864 where the 11 states seceded to keep slavery going was a hard fought battle. This was the time when Abraham Lincoln declared the PROCLAMATION OF EMANCIPTION in 1862 of all 3 million slaves who worked on the Southern plantations. Thus doing so, the southern states lost the civil war.  With the January 6th insurrectionist movements on the White House Capitol reminds us that these past memories have not been forgotten by White extremists who are from the south.  How can resolve this conflict in America?
5
授業計画/Class How African Americans rose up from the times of slavery and contributing to society at large, and how civil unrest was negotiated with peaceful marches.

Let us talk about some notable people who had the courage to stand up for civil rights as Martin Luther, King, Jr., with his I HAVE A DREAM SPEECH to Harriet Tubman who helped slaves escape in the underground tunnels to freedom up north.  Negotiating through the ideals based on helping those in need and in rejoining society as free citizens has helped build America to be a multicultural nation and in establishing the Rule of Law based on the Constitution. The Constitution is the Law of the Land for all 50 states and guarantees our human rights.

授業計画/Class The power of culture on the individual and group in society.  One cannot deny how we can interpret circumstances and situations that affect us on an emotional level. We can feel the sadness in eye of those who have lost a loved one to COVID-19, or to see the people who are hungry because of the drought or understand how it must feel to not have electricity or water due to extreme climate change. This is based on our value system taught to us at an early age, and we inherently understand what is good and bad which relates to our morality. Further, we also understand what is right and wrong because this is based on ethics in society. Let us talk more about these topics today.

授業計画/Class What are the four principles of negotiation according to the HARVARD PRINCIPLES OF NEGOTIATION

2. Look at the orientation and/or focus on each person-THE PUMPKIM EXAMPLE
3. Find the ONE criterial that MUST BE met for the person
4.Before choosing the ONE Criterial, develop other options to choose from. Giving more choices is better.
