講義概要/Course description
|
The Japanese economy - once an economic powerhouse, now suffers from an array of macroeconomic problems; long-term lacklustre economic performance, a high level of public debt, long-term deflation followed by inflation, the aging society, the population decline, the lowered fertility rate, and the troubled social welfare system. We try to understand how these economy-wide problems affect our decision-making, the government and policy-making. This course introduces “problem-motivated” issues and provides an interactive approach to tackle the ‘big picture’ macroeconomic problems. Macroeconomics I mainly sets up a basic analytical framework improving the data literacy, while Macroeconomics II closely looks into the policy tools that manage the stability of the macroeconomy.

達成目標/Course objectives
|
We gradually build our understanding of the highlighted problems and think about possible solutions. This eventually enables engaged students to critically examine the effects of macroeconomic policies.

補足事項/Supplementary notesThe class is organised in a highly interactive manner. Students are encouraged to participate in the class discussion (students are frequently put on the spot to share their views). In each semester we also plan to hold several workshop sessions when students formally present their views on specific macroeconomic problems. The week-by-week schedule is indicative only. The order and coverage of the topic may change depending on the progress and the class size.
