講義概要/Course description
Debate is an exciting world of exchange between two dynamics and diverse points of view. The purpose of debate in our modern, contemporary lifestyle is to provide all individuals and groups to participate in intellectual discussion in a respectful manner. Usually, there are debate teams that join forces in presentation their point of view on a given topic. Please note that not all topics can be determined in the narrow scope of what is right and what is wrong. In debate, there are grey areas that need to addressed, and brought out so that there is a commonality among two opposing sides, and that real debate can elevate our minds to a higher consciousness, and this is what makes humanity progress to the next level of achievement and success based on sound reasoning.

There is always two sides of an issue, but which was the right one? How can you decide what the best way to talk about a given topic without offending someone? Debate can be done effectively without hurting the feelings of other people. The most important way to discuss a difficult topic is to listen, and understand where the other person is coming from. |

授業計画/Class |
As discussed prior, Hegelian dialectics is about looking at both sides reasonably, and to bring two talking points closer to a grey area of compromise. Listening to a position that is different from yours is a learning experience, and this gives you a chance to understand where you stand on a given issue. Are you for or against violence against another human being? Do all human beings have a right to live in peace, side by side, without the threat of violence? What do you think about the meaning of peace? |

授業計画/Class |
There are big ideas that were developed over the last 200 years of human civilization. These big ideas help us understand our the values that we universally understand as truths. For example, we all believe that war is fundamentally wrong because this involves violence at an extreme level. In some societies, there is justification for fighting for a cause or a revolution against an government that does not hold any accountability towards its tax-paying citizens. |
