講義概要/Course description
|
Migration Studies (* this course is conducted entirely in English) As Japan’s population ages and shrinks, and labor shortages become more severe, the Japanese government is shifting towards more open acceptance of foreign workers. The government is starting to ease restrictions on both the number of foreign workers as well as their length of stay. At the same time, local governments, employers, non-profit organizations and NGOs are developing various initiatives to facilitate the integration of larger numbers of immigrants into Japanese workplaces and communities. Against this backdrop of great change in Japanese society, there is a need for Japan's future leaders to be knowledgeable about migration processes, policies, common issues, and potential solutions.
This course provides comprehensive coverage of key aspects of migration, including migration theory, policy, economic factors, and related challenges seen overseas and in Japan. This is an active learning class conducted in English, where students will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss a wide range of migration-related topics and issues.

達成目標/Course objectives
|
The aim of this course is to equip students with the knowledge of migration policy, practice, and related issues that will allow them to become informed members of Japanese society as debate on immigration policy and practice continues in the future. Through discussions and group work on related topics and issues, the course also aims to extend students’ English communication skills and instill students with the confidence to participate in migration-related discussions outside of university and on the global stage. The active learning methods used in this class will help to develop students’ collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
