講義概要/Course description
|
The course provides an overview of modern media technologies and their uses in society against wide historical background. First, the histories of print, audio and visual media in the English-speaking world, Europe and Japan will be introduced. Then we will trace the parallel trajectories of innovation in mass communication and computing that eventually led to the digital revolution at the turn of the 21st century. We will look into both news and entertainment, and explore the uses of media for personal and mass communication. Except for the first unit available on Course Power (content to check on demand; no need to show up in class), the course will be conducted in real time in the classroom. The teaching method is a mix of presentations by the lecturer and interactive learning (such as reading/watching recommended content and posting comments, mini-quiz at the end of each unit, discussion). Relevant information will be distributed on Course Power. I do not reply to inquiries on Course Power but in case of doubts, you are welcome to contact me by email. The email address can be found at the bottom of the syllabus (in the `class-related information` box) and I typically reply within 24 hours.
