講義概要/Course description
In this class, we study Japanese popular culture as a showcase for human experiences, social practices and issues typical of modernity and late (post) modernity throughout the world. We challenge the established practice of describing Japanese culture as 'unique' and zero in on its universally human, global, dynamic and changing content. The focus is on media representations through which modern culture is most often narrated, transmitted and consumed. After introductory series of lectures and readings about Japanese popular culture followed by discussion in class, the students will work in groups on projects organized around specific themes listed in the Lecture plan. The students will give presentations on the results of their research in groups in class. The format of presentations may vary (PowerPoint slides, videos, posters, etc.) but they should include concrete examples of cultural texts/media content, discussed in a critical manner.

メッセージ/Message
This class was designed in a deliberately open-ended way, in order to give students a lot of freedom in their choice of content to present on, as long as the content fits in the broad themes proposed by the instructor. So far the formula has proven right, as participants of many nationalities and backgrounds have shared a variety of perspectives on Japanese popular culture which is now a truly global phenomenon. I see my role as an instructor in moderating your conversation, and in adding new dimensions to what you have already discovered by yourselves.

その他/Others
Manners and attitude: 1) Eating and chewing gum in class is not allowed. Drinking soft drinks is OK. 2) Be present in your body and mind. Digital/online device usage unrelated to content currently discussed in class will negatively affect your score. 3) 15 minutes max is my limit for lateness. 4) Missing more than 3 classes without a valid reason will negatively impact your score.
