講義概要/Course description
|
This class will survey how war memories have influenced Japanese identity and vice versa in twentieth-century and twenty-first century Japan. The class will also examine the impact of Japanese and international politics on the relationship between war memories and Japanese identity. Lecture includes the explanation about diverse frameworks and functions of individual, collective, and public memory. Lectures and class discussions are based on weekly readings. Course lecture includes explanations about Japanese society and culture as background knowledge. Students will make class presentation based on the topic of their choice. Presentation schedule might be changed depending on class size.

達成目標/Course objectives
|
Students are expected to grasp the history of Japan's involvement in wars during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. They also seek to understand the frameworks and functions of individual, collective, and public memory. Furthermore, students should be able to explain how the war memories of the Asia-Pacific War have influenced Japanese national identity and vice versa and to explain how domestic and international politics have influenced the relationship between the war memories and national identity.
